Testing if the adverse effects of ocean acidification are not enhanced in the presence of mosquito control pesticides currently in use along the Florida Keys by exposing larvae of the scleractinian coral (P. astreoides) to naled. Also testing the adverse effects of ocean acidification in the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds entering the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary by exposing scleractinian coral in the presence of oxybenzone.

A 2 year study which explicitly examines how elevated pCO2, and the resultant increased OA, in concert with elevated seawater temperature and macroalgal exposure (individually and in combination) affect coral larvae health, survival, settlement and post-settlement growth and survival.

This report describes a project with goals to evaluate the effect of season and habitat on growth and survival of outplanted cultured corals; optimize culture techniques to address the need for restorative efforts on Florida's reef tract; continue restoration field trials by conducting a 2nd field outplant in May 2011 with cultured corals from Mote-TRL; maintain and monitor outplanted field trials; evaluate effects of habitat and season on coral growth and survival; maintain and monitor captive broodstock colonies in the land-based coral nursery; and expand production of cultured coral species.

Baker, Andrew C.; Jones, Paul R.
The initial goals of this project are to design and rigorously evaluate the specificity of oligonucleotide probes required for the identification and localization of algal symbionts (Symbiodinium spp.) in reef corals using fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH). Once appropriate probes have been designed, the FISH protocol will then be applied to studying symbiont distribution in cross sections of coral tissue prepared on slides.
